Christian Bale has played many different types of characters, from Batman to a former boxer dealing with substance abuse, to ex-marine dealing with PTSD. The real questions is, How does he prepare for these roles? And what are his methods?
When Bale takes a role he devotes himself to that role. He will perform his own stunts. When he played a role in The Machinist he lost an amazing 63 pounds, in only four months. He ate one apple and one can of tuna every day, and nothing else. In the end he weighed only 110 pounds. Taking on a skeletal appearance. In one of his other movies he ate maggots and worms.
After his role in The Machinist he played batman. He had to bulk up for this role. In order for him to play a role he adopts the role as his own. He tries his best to become the the role. No matter what it is. He will push his body to the brink of it’s ability to make a role more believable. When he played the ex-boxer, he was willing to get a bald spot put on his head to make it more believable. This was without talking to the directors and the producers. He cut his hair and gained weight and lost weight all on his own to make the character more believable.
The role Bale played in the American Hustle was based off a specific person. Bale tried his best to get into the mindset of the person. He even gain a bunch of weight, and got a comb over so that he would be more convincing.
His first role was at the age of 12. He played a boy that had to watch war horrors, in this World War 2 based movie. In this coming of age movie he went through many things. This movie is known as the start of his career.
If one of the characters were based of of somebody else he would do his best to get into the mindset of that person. He would use words, phrases, or memories to get into character . Bale is a great actor, he has almost perfected his American accent (he was born in Wales, and grew up in England). He should keep doing movies.
I have learnt many things from the research I have done on Christian Bale. I have learnt that you have have to use your own emotion to put into the character. To make it more believable you have to use real emotions.
In my role I will try to put the emotion that is needed into my character. To make the emotions in the play, like the fear, more visible. While I am on stage I will try to think of it less as a play, and more of a real situation. This will hopefully make my character more believable.
