Actors and their Techniques – Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway is known for her roles in The Princess Diaries, Alice in Wondeland, Bride Wars, Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises, Les Miserables, and so many more. She has played roles for movies and television and is known for her stellar method acting. Her mother was an actress, too. It was her who inspired Anne Hathway to follow in her footsteps. Her mother actually played Fantine in Les Miserables, which Hathway wanted to do too. Her acting style is often compared to Judy Garland, who is her favorite actress. Hathway's idol is Meryl Streep, who she starred with in Devil Wears Prada.
In an interview with Charlie Rose, Hathaway says that the main thing acting school taught her was how to listen. By listening one can learn compassion and kindness. For Hathaway, she learned all her techniques and how to get into a role just from listening. Her favorite acting lesson she had was when the teacher made all the kids try to get a quater he had in his hand and they all failed. Then, he gave the quarter to someone and tried to get it from them. The teacher attacked the student's hand and received the quarter almost immediately. "That is what a scene is about, you have to figure out what the quarter is and you have to give that much energy going for it," says Hathaway.
In her role as a Fantine, the single mother or becomes a prostetute to support her child, in Les Miserables, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. However, Hathaway was known as a master for her incredible method acting. She cut off her hair, and lost a ton of weight where she ate less than 500 calories per day. For the movie, she out twenty five pounds in all. In more preparation for the role as Fantine, she took voice lessons for a month and practiced crying in front of a mirror. Her inspiration for going that far was that she wanted to be more like Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, and Cate Blanchett. Hathway wants to be the kind of actresses they are. So, in Les Miserables, she worked hard, trying to picture how Streep, Winslet, and Blanchett would do it. In an interview, she says, “My general rule about something is I’ll only cut it off if it will grow back.” In this quote she means she that she will go to great lengths to fit the appearance and behavior of the role she is playing, as long as the change is not permenant.
All in all, Anne Hathway is a very skillful actress and an exceptional method actress. I learned to take the kind of risks Anne Hathaway does in her acting. For the play, I will do my best to really learn my character and do whatever it takes to become them, just like Hathaway does in her roles
